The following diaries were written by four generations of the Hurlburt family. The earliest three were written by Isaac Hurlburt who resided in Broome County, New York. Another three were written by Isaac's daughter-in-law Mary Ellen (Holcomb) Hurlburt. Her first was written when the family still lived in Broome County, but the next two were written after the family had moved to the Pasadena area of southern California. Most prolific was Jennie (Howe) Hurlburt, the daughter-in-law of Mary Ellen, who wrote at least eleven diaries. Her earliest, dated 1904, was written in Broome County and the remaining were written in Pasadena. Finally, Jennie's daughter, Vera, wrote a diary in 1967. Nineteen complete years of events over a span of over 100 years.
How did I obtain these diaries? When I was twelve, my great grandmother, Vera (Hurlburt) Stevens, gave me two diaries that had been passed down in our family for several generations. They were the 1862 and 1874 diaries of her great grandfather, Isaac A. Hurlburt, Sr., a resident of Broome County, New York. Years later she gave me the diaries that her mother had written as well as the one diary that she had written. The 1871 diary of Isaac Hurlburt as well as the three diaries of Mary Ellen were located on a recent trip to visit relatives in upstate New York.
